Spend a night off the tourist track in Matsumoto, with a beautiful castle and views of the Japan Alps. Take a mountain walk at Jigokudani to see snow monkeys (macaques) lounging in natural hot springs. Ride Japan’s bullet train, the Shinkansen, with a 7-day Japan Rail pass. Visit Nara, with 8th-century temples in a beautiful park, where hundreds of deer roam freely. Marvel at Himeji Castle, the largest in Japan. Return to Tokyo for one night before flying home.
TRANSPORTATION, PACE, GROUP SIZE – Private tour bus for 3 days, public transport (train, subway) on other days. This tour uses Japan Rail trains extensively, so luggage must be carry-on size. Luggage must be carried up steps in train and subway stations. Many days have 5 miles of walking for sightseeing. In Tokyo the group will use the subway, which is often crowded. Travelers should travel light and should be in moderately good physical condition. Maximum group size is 15 persons.
WEATHER – March weather is cool, typically in the 50s or 60s in the daytime, and in the 40s or low 50s at night. Rain can be expected 4 or 5 of the days of the trip. Cherry blossoms in Japan typically start blooming at the end of March. This tour does NOT coincide with peak cherry blossom season, but we might see the start of the bloom.
